We are honored to be leading Stanford's Initiative on Improving K–12 Education, which presents a distinctive opportunity to break new ground on some of the most important problems in public education today. By linking the university's tremendous depth of expertise in the field of education and the core disciplines of math, science, history, and English with rigorous research targeted at key reform challenges, the initiative is poised to advance improvements in
K–12 education.
Our work focuses on the quality of classroom instruction, the day-to-day interaction between teachers and students that drives learning. Teachers need proven tools and knowledge to be effective. But the broader context in which teaching occurs also demands attention. Schools and districts need innovative leaders who foster positive learning environments for students and teachers. And education policies must be designed to promote—not hinder—productive teaching and learning. The K–12 Initiative addresses each critical piece of the public education puzzle.
The effort will require a level of collaboration and commitment previously untapped. We are excited to take up the challenge and hope you will join us in this vital endeavor.
