Join us on a guided tour of the Año Nuevo elephant seal colony at the height of breeding season. This CA state park is the largest mainland breeding colony for northern elephant seals.  Each year, over 3,000 seals return to Año Nuevo to give birth to pups, nurse and mate. Male elephant seals can weigh up to 2 1/2 tons, and battle viciously for domination on the sandy beach. Tours will be led by Dr. Robert Siegel, volunteer Año Nuevo docent and Stanford faculty member.  (See bio below.)

Each tour lasts about 2.5 hours, and consists of a moderately strenuous 3 mile hike over sand and sloping terrain. Be prepared for windy, rainy conditions, as well as muddy trails. Layered clothing, sturdy shoes, and hooded rain gear are recommended. Umbrellas are not allowed, but cameras and binoculars are welcome. Bring bottled water for drinking as there is none available during the walk.

Children age three and under are free and do not need a ticket.  Strollers are not permitted for safety reasons.  Experienced parents recommend carrying younger children in a backpack or baby carrier, as tour groups are led quite close to the large animals who can move unpredictably.

The Stanford Coastside Club will be hosting a separate tour at 10:00 am on the same day.  To register for that tour, please visit their event page.
