Abstract:
President al-Bashir’s arrival at the AU Summit in South Africa on Saturday 13 June 2015 put South Africa’s obligations and commitment to international justice firmly into focus. As a state party to the Rome Statute of 1998, South Africa is obliged to cooperate with the ICC, which has previously issued an arrest warrant for alBashir. South Africa has domesticated the ICC Treaty and thus its law ensures the case against al-Bashir at the ICC is within the purview of the South African legal system. This talk evaluates where South Africa stands today on international justice, the status of the ICC around the world, and what the Bashir matters means for South Africa, Africa and the international community.
