Guns, the Constitution, Regulation and the Courts
What is the status of gun regulation in the US in 2016, what are the key issues, who is taking what positions, and what measures work to promote public safety? We will discuss what regulation is permitted under the Second Amendment, and efforts to expand and restrict gun safety laws by state and local governments.
Join us for dinner with Bill Abrams, '76, P'14, Consulting Professor in Human Biology at Stanford, teaches courses on children and the law, policy making, constitutional law, science, innovation and the law, and the death penalty. Professor Abrams is also the Managing Partner of the Palo Alto office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP.
This talk is a part of the “Stanford Engaged Discussion Series”. This series was developed by the Stanford Club of Chicago and the Stanford Black Alumni Association – Chicago to provide a comfortable, fact-based forum to learn about and discuss challenging topics facing society in general and Chicago specifically. By leveraging the expertise of Stanford professors and the Chicago alumni peer group, we:
- offer guided discussion of subjects that are "uncomfortable" for society at large
- invite experts in their field and identify pre-reading materials that inform and challenge our assumptions
- include data and discussion relevant to the issues facing Chicago
- draw a diverse group of Stanford alumni to ensure broad perspectives
