Come join your Stanford Club friends in an educational trip to Kitt Peak’s Nightly Observing Program.
Logistics: Meet us at the Visitor Center approximately 60 miles from Tucson. Look for Susan Thibodeaux in a Stanford shirt. If there is interest, we can try to coordinate car-pooling. Please bring a jacket as it is very cold up on the mountain once the sun goes down.
Time: Will need to leave Tucson between 3:15 and 3:30 pm, arriving at Kitt Peak just before 5. Sunset is about 6 pm, and the program lasts 4 hours.
Description: This will be an evening of astronomical wonder far from city lights under the celebrated dark skies of the desert southwest. From high atop Kitt Peak you will experience the night sky while professional astronomers work in the observatories all around you. The evening begins with a light supper (included in the reservation fee), followed by a dramatic sunset viewing. Then guides help you use star charts to locate constellations and take a binocular tour of the night sky. Lastly, you use the Visitor Center's research-class telescopes to visually observe a variety of astronomical objects, while also learning their importance.
