Doug McAdam, Stanford Sociology Professor and author of Deeply Divided: Racial Politics and Social Movements in America, will be joining us for an open discussion of the current state of American democracy: how we came by the unprecedented divisions--political, economic and racial--that characterize the contemporary U.S., and an examination of the features threatening our democratic values.

As background for the discussion, we encourage those attending to read chapters 1 and 8 of Professor McAdam's book, Deeply Divided: Racial Politics and Social Movements in America. Chapter 1 sketches the central argument of the book; Chapter 8 discusses the threats to democracy posed by the current situation and possible remedies.

With the backdrop of the recent election, this is a valuable opportunity to consider the health and well-being of American democracy and promises to be an important and informative evening!

At 6:30 p.m. we'll begin check-in and have a reception with wine and light dinner.  The open discussion with Professor McAdam will start promptly at 7:00 p.m.
