What is Nogales like on the other side of the wall? Beyond the souvenir shops and dental offices clustered near the border lies a dynamic, emerging city of some 400,000 people with a developing social and civic society, totally surprising to most US visitors. Since 2010 the Border Community Alliance and its Mexican partner, FESAC, have offered safe and educational daylong excursions into Nogales Sonora Mexico so that tour participants can come and see for themselves. Led by knowledgeable guides (Mexican and American) the day begins in Tubac with a brief historic orientation to the Borderlands before crossing into Mexico. There you will travel in a comfortable van to view the city’s development, including the stunning growth and maturing of the housing and maquiladora sectors. After lunch at a local burrito restaurant, you will visit several social service organizations, talk with their leaders and come to a new appreciation of the many creative citizen-led initiatives. The final stop before returning to the US is a visit to the beautifully decorated LaRoca Restaurant where you will meet a member of the US Consulate staff for conversation over coffee and flan.
Tours begin at 9:00 am sharp in Tubac, returning to that same community between 5:30 and 6:00. The fee includes transportation in Mexico, lunch and snack, expert guidance, tax and tips. BRING YOUR PASSPORT!
