Within the next 20 to 40 years, new science and technology in genetics, stem cells, and assisted reproduction will transform how most people reproduce. Instead of usually conceiving our children in bed, most children will be conceived in fertility clinics. Prospective parents will create scores, if not hundreds, of embryos, each of which will have its entire genome sequenced before the parents choose which one or two to transfer for possible pregnancy and birth. Professor Henry T. Greely, Director, Center for Law and the Biosciences at Stanford Law School, will discuss the technologies that will make this possible, the social forces that will make it irresistible, and the ethical, legal, and practical problems that this process will cause.
