Do you want to expand your understanding of Islam and what it teaches about women? Do you have questions but were afraid to ask, such as, when is a head scarf (hijab) or full body covering (burka) required and what does it mean to the women who wear them? If yes, come hear panel speakers provide historical background on Islamic law as it pertains to women and how it can be understood in a modern context. The panel includes: Dr. Rania Awaad, a practicing psychiatrist based at the Stanford School of Medicine, clinical instructor in the Stanford Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and director of the Muslims and Mental Health Lab where she mentors and oversees multiple lines of research on mental health; Mr. Rami Nsour, who has extensive knowledge of Islamic law and who is an established speaker and lecturer at notable Muslim events throughout the U.S.; and Ms. Yannina Casillas, Legislative and Government Affairs Coordinator for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, California.
This event will provide an opportunity for both men and women to ask questions in a safe environment, learn about different perspectives and engage in a lively discussion about this very important topic. Come join us for light appetizers at 6 pm. The panel speakers will begin at 6:30 pm and will be followed by a question and answer session.
