Saikat Majumdar

assistant professor of English

Saikat Majumdar, assistant professor of English, specializes in English as a global literary language. His research and teaching interests also include the novel and narrative theory, interdisciplinary humanities, and creative writing. His book, Prose of the World (Columbia University Press, forthcoming), explores the aesthetic and political significance of the ordinary in Anglophone fiction from Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and India, ranging from the late-nineteenth century to the present day.

Professor Majumdar grew up in India and has studied and taught in the US and Canada.  His work has been published in various academic journals, and his novel, Silverfish, was published in 2007 by HarperCollins India.

Professor Majumdar is a member of the committee in charge of Stanford's Program in Modern Thought and Literature and an affiliated faculty member for the Center for South Asia and for the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. His current project is a transnational study of the literary public intellectual, a subject on which he currently co-chairs a Geballe Research Workshop at the Stanford Humanities Center.
