Robert Siegel, '76, MA '77, MD '90, is an associate professor at Stanford Medical School, where he is course director of the infectious disease component of the required preclinical curriculum. He has appointments in the microbiology and immunology, The Program in Human Biology, and the Center for African Studies. His courses focus on virology and infectious disease, on genetics and molecular biology, on global health and development, on photography, and on Darwin. He has served in an advisory capacity for numerous international NGOs, organizations, and projects including FACE AIDS, Support for International Change, Ocean Medicine Foundation, and Free the Children. He has organized conferences on international health and on Darwin, including the annual Stanford Darwin Day Symposium, and a recent conference on issues of development in Papua New Guinea. Professor Siegel is an avid walker and nature enthusiast. He is a docent at two biological preserves: Stanford’s own Jasper Ridge, and Año Nuevo where he helps visitors view and understand the Northern elephant seal. Robert is passionate about travel and exploration and has traveled with undergraduate and medical students to six continents. A devoted Stanford enthusiast, he arrived at Stanford as a freshman 39 years ago and completed three of his five degrees here – BA in psychology, MA in education, and MD in the school of medicine.  As an undergraduate he played intercollegiate soccer, performed with the Band, acted with Ram’s Head, and was the second “Stanford Tree.” In 2011, Professor Siegel received the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching.

"Bob Siegel was one of the highlights of the trip for us. He was always available, always interested and always interesting."
