Michaela Bronstein

assistant professor of English

Michaela works on fiction from the late 19th century to the 21st, including novels from the UK, USA, Kenya, and South Africa. Her work examines the way literary works get re-imagined, reused, and repurposed beyond their own moments. The politics of novels, in other words, isn’t just in what authors do with their materials, but in what we as readers do with the novels long afterward. Her book, Out of Context: The Uses of Modernist Fiction, will be out from Oxford University Press in Spring 2018. She’s also published work on novels about political violence, on the history of serial storytelling in novels and TV shows, on how literary critics can take the experience of reading a book for the first time into account, and more.
