The Stanford Challenge

Launched in 2006, The Stanford Challenge is a five-year campaign that places Stanford at the fore of efforts to seek solutions to intractable global problems and educate the next generation of leaders for a complex world.

The Stanford Challenge has never been about the total dollar commitment, but rather about the people and programs these dollars are helping to underwrite. The university recently reached the initial $4.3 billion milestone in gifts and pledges. However, there are still important needs originally envisioned in the campaign that have yet to be funded as well as a number of incremental opportunities identified since the campaign's launch for which we are seeking support. And the economic difficulties of recent months have had a significant and negative effect on Stanford's budget, making our needs in areas like financial aid that much more acute. In short, we have not yet reached the campaign's finish line.

For the duration of The Stanford Challenge, our primary focus will be on sustaining our people—through increased professorships, scholarships, and graduate fellowships—and increasing vital expendable gifts.
