Can Universal Preschool Close the Achievement Gap? - Deborah Stipek

The achievement gap has barely budged despite concerted reform efforts over the last several decades. Recent brain research and evidence on the effects of preschool suggest it may help move the needle. Will it? Come find out.

Deborah Stipek is the former dean and a professor in the Graduate School of Education. Her scholarship concerns instructional effects on children’s achievement motivation, early childhood education, elementary education and school reform. In addition to her scholarship, she works with district, state, and federal policy makers on policies affecting children and education. She served for five years on the Board on Children, Youth and Families at the National Research Council, was Chair of National Research Council Committee for Increasing High School Students’ Engagement and Motivation to Learn and she directed the MacArthur Foundation Network on Teaching and Learning. She is currently doing work related to early math teaching and learning.
