Join Dan Schwartz, Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education, and Senior Lecturer Denise Pope for a live taping of this Stanford podcast series. School’s In delves into what is working and what needs to change in the classrooms of today.

At this taping, Dan and Denise will discuss the latest examples in a noticeable trend of teacher advocacy – from educators demonstrating on the frontlines to teachers running for public office – and what we can do to elevate the importance of teaching and learning in our society.

About The Guests

U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan, BS '89 is an Air Force veteran, engineer, entrepreneur, and educator who is continuing her career of service as the first woman ever to represent Pennsylvania's 6th District in Congress.

Chrissy is the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors who came to America with nothing. She grew up in a military family; her parents met when her father and grandfather flew P3s in the same Navy squadron. She earned her engineering degree from Stanford with an ROTC scholarship that launched her service in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves, and later earned her M.S. in Technology and Policy from MIT.

Chrissy has helped lead several thriving Southeastern Pennsylvania companies including AND1, a basketball apparel company headquartered in Paoli, and B Lab, the organization that launched the B Corporation movement. She went on to serve in Teach for America as a chemistry teacher at Simon Gratz High School in North Philadelphia, and then led and scaled a non-profit helping thousands of underserved students all across America build their literacy skills.

These experiences helped shape her political vision of a great nation united by common values that leaves no one behind. She is committed to fighting for access to quality, affordable healthcare, common sense gun safety, government accountability and transparency, and working to build a strong, stable economy with good jobs and good benefits for everyone.

Chrissy is a leader driven by a spirit of service. She’s a mom, a longtime resident of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and a first-time congressional representative heading to Washington to solve real problems for the people and communities of Pennsylvania.

Jessica Stovall is a first-year PhD student at the Stanford Graduate School of Education’s Race Inequality and Language in Education (RILE) program, and she is also a Teaching Fellow in the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP). Previously, she taught English Language Arts for 11 years at Oak Park River and Forest High School (OPRFHS) in Oak Park, Illinois, where she worked to interrupt systemic racial achievement disparities. Her work at OPRFHS is featured in Steve James’ 2018 documentary series, America to Me, on the Starz network. In 2014, Jessica was recognized with a Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching, where spent a semester in Wellington, New Zealand, studying educational debts between white and indigenous Māori students. Since her return, Jessica has embarked on two ambitious education projects – a comprehensive teacher professional development program and a workbook for teachers – both focused on eliminating racial-predictability of student achievement. She holds a MA in Literature from Northwestern University, and a BS in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin--Madison.

About The Hosts

Denise Pope is a co-founder of Challenge Success and a senior lecturer at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, where she specializes in student engagement, curriculum studies, qualitative research methods, and service learning. Challenge Success is an expanded version of the "SOS: Stressed-Out Students" project that Dr. Pope founded and directed from 2003 to 2008. She is the author of Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students, which was awarded Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal (2001), and co-author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids. Dr. Pope lectures nationally on parenting techniques and pedagogical strategies to increase student health, engagement with learning, and integrity. Prior to teaching at Stanford, Dr. Pope taught high school English in Fremont, CA and college composition and rhetoric courses at Santa Clara University.


Daniel L. Schwartz is the I. James Quillen Dean and Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Educational Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). An expert in human learning and educational technology, Schwartz oversees a laboratory whose computer-focused developments in science and math instruction permit original research into fundamental questions of learning. His book, The ABCs of How We Learn: 26 Scientifically Proven Approaches, How They Work and When to Use Them, distills learning theories into practical solutions for use at home or in the classroom. NPR noted the book among the "best reads" for 2016.
