Professor Robert Siegel discusses The Coming Influenza Pandemic
In the winter of 1918-19 influenza virus H1N1 was responsible for the worst human epidemic of all time killing more than 50 million people. Even today, armed with effective vaccines and antiviral drugs, influenza and associated pneumonia is the only infectious disease in the top ten causes of death in the U.S. killing over 50,000 people per year. Worldwide pandemic influenza still poses a great risk. We’ll discuss why it is such a formidable foe and what infectious surprises the future may hold.
