Join fellow Stanford alumni for a hike in the beautiful Surrey Hills. This year, we'll be focusing our walk around Box Hill, one of Surrey's highest - and most breathtaking - beauty spots. Frankie Freeman, a '10 M.A. alum who grew up in the area, will lead the walk.
The cycling fans among you will know Box Hill as the 'King of the Mountains' stretch of the 2012 Olympic cycling route. Thankfully, we won't be climbing the hill on two wheels, but instead over a 3.5-4 hour circular walk, starting in the pretty village of Westhumble. The hike will take us through Norbury Park, Mickleham Downs and finally through the Box Hill Country Park, passing through a mixture of woodland and downland. If we're lucky, we'll catch the bluebells while they're in season.
The walk is fairly steep in parts, and is about 12 miles long. Sturdy walking shoes/boots and outdoor clothing are strongly advised. Expect to feel a little achy the next morning!
On May 9 the group will meet at Box Hill and Westhumble train station at 9.30am. Direct trains run from London Victoria every hour (you'll want the 8:31am train, which gets in at 9:20am), and there is free parking at the station for those who would rather drive. The walk is circular, and trains runs back to London at 28 minutes past the hour (allowing for lunch, we'll likely be getting the 3:28pm train back).
We'll stop for lunch on the summit of Box Hill, to take in the views. Please either bring a picnic, or cash for the cafe. Plenty of water and snacks for the rest of the walk are recommended!
Please RSVP to Frankie Freeman (fjfreeman@gmail.com).
