Unlocking the Power of Good Health: how stem cell biology is transforming today’s healthcare landscape
Join us for an exciting faculty talk, along with a wine & appetizers reception! The topic is longevity: the ambition of kings, super villains and pretty much all of us. It’s also become a focus for biotechnology companies interested in making a big impact on healthcare. At Stanford Medicine, Dr. Jill Helms and colleagues are working on understanding why we age, then translating that new knowledge into therapeutic strategies that slow the natural process. This will require “moonshot thinking” and some serious team science, both made possible by Stanford’s rich environment. Dr. Helms looks forward to sharing with you some of Stanford’s latest insights and therapeutic strategies to help us age healthfully.
Dr. Helms is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at Stanford University and her longevity research focuses on understanding why healing slows as we age. Many such age-related changes can be traced back to sluggish stem cells, and her group has developed methods to re-activate a patient’s own stem cells for therapeutic intervention in a broad range of conditions affecting bone, cartilage, skin, and hair. Conducting clinically-relevant research is Dr. Helms’ main objective, but it goes hand-in-hand with another goal: she believes that education is one of the most important tools to improving health, and aims to use every avenue to transform the way people think about science and medicine.
We will start with a wine & hors d’oeuvres reception at 6pm, then Dr. Helms will give her talk starting at 7pm. There will be time for Q&A after.
