Saving Democracy from Russian Rage, Chinese Ambition, and American Complacency
Turbulent times: Hong Kong, Ukraine, Election Interference and more

Democracy seems to be in retreat around the world as authoritarian regimes are becoming bolder and more repressive, elected leaders are abusing constitutional norms, and illiberal populist parties are making electoral gains. Join Professor Larry Diamond as he analyzes the scope and causes of the global democratic recession and lays out a path toward democratic renewal at home and abroad.

Larry Diamond, '73, MA '78, PhD '80, is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a professor, by courtesy, of sociology and of political science. He has written seven books and edited or co-edited more than 40 on democratic development around the world, including his most recent, Ill Winds: Saving Democracy from Russian Rage, Chinese Ambition, and American Complacency. Larry is the 2014 recipient of the Richard W. Lyman Award for service to the Stanford Alumni Association and, in June 2016, he was honored with the Kenneth Cuthbertson Award for Exceptional Service to Stanford University, recognizing his “visionary leadership” of the Haas Center. In 2007, the Associated Students of Stanford University named him “Teacher of the Year” for teaching that “transcends political and ideological barriers.”

We are fortunate to hear from such an esteemed scholar of democracy in these turbulent and chanaging times. To get a glimpse of the subject, listen to a Lawfare Podcast with Professor Diamond and read his op-ed on signs of hope for our democracy.
