The Stanford Women's Club of San Francisco presents a lecture and discussion about the effects of one of history's worldwide pandemics, the Black Plague. In the year 1348, the Plague may well have wiped out about half the population of Europe alone in a matter of months. How did the Plague change the course of history, and how did the Plague help give birth to the Renaissance? Are there lessons for us in 2020?

Our speaker is Dr. Ronald Weissman, former Professor of Medieval and Renaissance History at the University of Maryland. Ron himself was later infected...with the exciting developments happening in Silicon Valley! Initially, he joined forces with Steve Jobs. After 17 years as a venture capitalist, Ron, a San Francisco native, now spends his time as an angel investor. Before COVID-19 hit, Ron made frequent trips to Europe as a lecturer and venture capital advisor, often to Italy. His first book was about private clubs during the Italian Renaissance. Perhaps there will be some lessons here for us!

Harpist: before Dr. Weissman’s lecture, harpist Chloe Tula will treat us to a short performance of Renaissance-era music. Chloe recently concluded three years as a Harp Fellow with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Her orchestral engagements include performances with the San Francisco Symphony, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Louisville Orchestra and the Santa Fe Opera.
