Join Joel Stein ’93, MA ’94 in conversation with his fellow Stanford Daily writer Julie Cantor ’94, MA ’95 on Joel's new book, In Defense of Elitism: Why I'm Better Than You and You're Better Than Someone Who Didn't Buy This Book. To better understand the 2016 election results, Joel spends a week in Roberts County, Texas, which had the highest percentage of Trump voters in the country. He goes to the home of Trump-loving Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams, meets people who create fake news, and finds the new elitist organizations merging both right and left to fight the populists. According to Joel, “This is a call to arms for the elite. Not an actual call to arms, since we don’t think people should have those, but metaphoric arms, which are the type of arms that will be useless against the populists’ arms, which are real arms. Which is why I’m not standing up to the populists in person, but here in print, where none of them will know about it.”
A Thurber finalist, Joel was a columnist for Time Magazine for twenty years, and then a columnist for Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times. He has taught at Princeton, written for several sitcoms, and authored Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity. At Stanford, Joel earned a BA and MA in English.
Dr. Julie Cantor '94, MA 95 is an expert on issues at the intersection of medicine and law and is a faculty member at UCLA School of Law. After graduating from Stanford, Julie received her JD and MD from UC Berkeley School of Law and Yale School of Medicine, respectively.
