June 1, 2021 is the one hundred year anniversary of one of the most severe incidents of racial violence in U.S. histoy -- the Tulsa race massacre of 1921, also known as the Tulsa race riot. Tulsa, 1921: Reporting a Massacre by Randy Krehbiel shines new light into the shadows that have long been cast over the this race riot that began May 31 and lasted two days. It left somewhere between 20 and 300 people dead, mostly African Americans, and destroyed Tulsa’s prosperous Black neighborhood of Greenwood, known as the Black Wall Street. More than 1,400 homes and businesses were burned, and nearly 10,000 people were left homeless.
Despite its severity and destructiveness, the Tulsa race massacre was barely mentioned in history books until the late 1990s, when a state commission was formed to document the incident. As Krehbiel considers the context and consequences of the violence and devastation, he asks, Has the city—indeed, the nation—exorcised the prejudices that led to this tragedy?
