Barbara Clayton

Barbara Clayton, PhD ’99, has been teaching at Stanford since 2000. She currently offers courses through Continuing Studies, where she is always looking for new ways to bring the ancient world to a contemporary audience. Barbara is the author of A Penelopean Poetics: Reweaving the Feminine in Homer’s “Odyssey.” She has also written on topics that include Aristotle’s Parts of Animals, the Roman poet Lucretius, and “The Argonautica” of Apollonius of Rhodes. Although she is primarily interested in the literature of the ancient world, with the Odyssey a particular passion, her academic career has allowed her to branch out into history, philosophy and political thought. Her current research focuses on adaptations of the Homeric epics from the 20th and 21st centuries.
