“Living Well in Earthquake Country: The East Bay’s Seismic Prospects”
Professor Ross Stein explains the seismic juggernaut in the East Bay in the wake of the 1849 Gold Rush, the 1868 Hayward quake, and the 1906 San Andreas shock. He will discuss why this is the best time to prepare for the next earthquake and the specific seismic issues in the East Bay. Registration will open on September 1st and close October 1st.
Ross Stein PhD ’80 is a Consulting Professor of Geophysics. He studies how earthquakes interact by the transfer of stress, and teaches scientific presentation and public speaking to PhD students. Ross co-founded the Global Earthquake Model Foundation (GEM), a public-private partnership building a seismic risk model for the world, and is cofounder & CEO of Temblor.net. He has given a prominent TED talk, "Defeating Earthquakes," and has been featured in many documentary films including NOVA’s “Killer Quake”, and the multiple award-winning 2004 National Geographic IMAX movie "Forces of Nature," which he helped to write and animate.
