Abigail Adams lost her job as First Lady in March 1801, when her husband lost his bid for re-election. This talk will describe that election and the personal dynamics that involved not only Abigail and John Adams, but Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton during the first contested presidential election in US history. Edith Gelles, senior scholar at Stanford’s Clayman Institute for Gender Research, is a biographer of Abigail Adams and most recently edited her letters for the Library of America.  Hosted by the Stanford Women's Club of San Francisco and open to all!
