Professor Michael F. Marmor will discuss how vision, normal or abnormal, is central to how artist's create art and to how we view it. Myths and realities of about vision and art will be explored through the work of artists such as El Greco, Rembrandt, Degas, Monet and O'Keeffe (among many others).

Michael F. Marmor, MD is a professor of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine. Educated at Harvard, he has been at Stanford more than 40 years, where he served for a decade as chair of ophthalmology. He has also taught regularly in the undergraduate program in human biology. Dr. Marmor is a leading scholar in retinal physiology and diseases of retinal function, and has extended this work for many decades to explore the interface of vision and the arts. He has written a number of books and more than 300 papers, about the retina and about visual aspects of art, history, music and sports. Marmor lectures widely about the arts, and his most recent book, The Artist’s Eyes considers the relationship of vision and eye disease to art.
