Book Salon
People of the Book

  • This month we're reading People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. Our faculty host is Elaine Treharne.

Listen to an interview with our Book Salon host.

"Pulitzer Prize winner, Geraldine Brooks, creates the most evocative living history in her People of the Book, in which a richly illuminated manuscript reveals its turbulent past to a modern-day book-lover, whose own future is tied up in the past that she investigates."

Elaine Treharne, professor of English and co-director of the Center of Medieval and Early Modern Studies

About this quarter's book selection

An Australian rare-book expert, Hanna Heath, analyzes and takes on conservation responsibilities for the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, an ancient text with a history all of its own. She discovers tiny artifacts in the book’s binding including an insect wing, wine stains, salt crystals and a white hair that pulls her unexpectedly into the past. Inspired by a true story, People of the Book ushers readers through a harrowing journey with Hanna as she reveals the story behind this illuminated Hebrew manuscript.
