Elaine Treharne
professor of English and co-director of the Center of Medieval and Early Modern Studies
Elaine Treharne is a Welsh academic living in Stanford and professor of english for the Center of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. She specializes in medieval manuscript studies, particularly those books that contain english religious prose and poetry from c.1000-1220.
She has written extensively on the history of the book, too, and maintains a blog here: historyoftexttechnologies.blogspot.com.
Elaine is currently working on The Sensual Book (having published Living Through Conquest: the Politics of Old and Middle English, 1020 to 1220 last year with Oxford University Press). Her research involves a great deal of research into medieval methods of book-making, especially the provision of animal skin upon which such old books were written with quills. (Stanford has several workshops a year on medieval manuscript production.)
She also teaches palaeography (the study of ancient handwriting) and is introducing new courses on Beowulf (from the manuscript to the film) and The Material Book (all handmade books, from papyrus to modern artists' books).
"Elaine was fun, interesting, so well prepared and totally held our attention, and after every single talk she gave, we wanted more! She added so much to the tour."
