Join fellow alumni for lunch and a presentation by Professor Larry Diamond, one of Stanford's best-known experts on foreign policy. Professor Diamond will speak on Democracy Promotion and American Foreign Policy in a Dangerous Age. Highlights of his talk include:
- Freedom and democracy in the world are now in a state of deepening recession. More and more states are suppressing basic freedoms, closing civic space, exchanging with one another the legal and technical tools of repression, and defying popular aspirations for democratic accountability.
- The United States and Europe have been preoccupied with hard security threats--radical Islamist terrorism, military conquest by ISIS and Boko Haram, Iran's nuclear weapons program, Putin's aggression in Ukraine.
- Not only to advance our values, but to confront the proliferating threats to our national security, we must strengthen democracies and revive global democratic progress. To do this, we need a coherent strategy and a renewed self-confidence about our unique role in the world.
