About the Galleries: The CAU Art Galleries are home to a historical collection of African-American art and the illustrious "Art of the Negro" murals by famed artist Hale Woodruff. Woodruff's work was recently feautred in a major retrospective at the High Museum of Art.

Beginning in 1942, the university hosted national exhibitions for African-American artists who did not have access to public or cultural institutions because of segregation. During a period of 29 years, more than 900 black artists from around the country sent their works to compete in the "Atlanta University Art Annuals."  By purchasing the winners of the Art Annuals competition, and through other more recent gifts and acquisitions, the Galleries' permanent collection now contains work by such major artists as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Radcliffe Bailey, Elizabeth Catlett, and many others.

The galleries are located in Trevor Arnett Hall, 2nd Level. Trevor Arnett Hall is on the corner of Greensferry Street and James P. Brawley Drive. Traveling from I-75/85 to I-20 West, Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries is 5 blocks north of I-20 Lee Street /Atlanta University Center Exit (in other words Turn Right onto Lee Street); Park at the right end of the series of large parking lots.
