February's selection is the South African novelist Damon Galgut's In A Strange Room. This acclaimed novel, which was short-listed for the 2010 Man Booker Prize, was originally published in three parts, one of which won an O. Henry Prize. In A Strange Room is perhaps the most literal manifestation of our book club's theme of "journeys," for each third of the novel centers around a different voyage that the main character takes. As he travels from Greece to Lesotho, from Malawi to India, his journeys become vehicles of exploration for the intense interpersonal relationships that spring out of his travels while simultaneously prompting introspection on his own identity. Like our January selection, In A Strange Room plays with unconventional narrative structures and is a hauntingly beautiful book that pulls at the reader's heartstrings as the protagonist searches for human connection.

Hard copies of this book may be a little harder to find.  If you don't want to use an e-book like Kindle or Nook, and you can't get a hard copy through Barnes & Noble or the regular Amazon, you might want to try eBay or Amazon's used book sellers (or the library!)

If you so desire, feel free to bake or make a snack to share, or bring a bottle of wine or a blend of tea you would like others to try.  Parking is anywhere on the street in front of the house. But if anyone has physical access issues, they can pull into the drive and park in the back and will be able to get into the house easily from there.
