You woke up today as you do every day, wrote the script of how your day would go, and everyone else followed that script, right? We wish. The truth is, all of us are improvising most of the time -- being present, noticing what’s going on, and adapting to that information. The skills of improv aren’t just for performers; they’re not about having to be funny; they’re for anyone seeking better communication, more access to ideas, or more successful interactions with others. Please join us for a painless, fun introduction to improv concepts that can help you at work or at play.

Facilitator: Adam Tobin, Senior Lecturer in Film & Media Studies

Adam Tobin is a Senior Lecturer in the Film & Media Studies program at Stanford and the faculty in residence at Stanford in New York for winter 2020. A screenwriter and playwright, Tobin has also co-taught Improvisationally Speaking in the Stanford Continuing Studies program for 10 years. He created the sitcom About a Girl and the reality show Best Friend’s Date for Viacom’s TeenNick (formerly The N channel) and has written for ABC, ESPN, and the Discovery Channel. Most recently Tobin wrote the script and lyrics for the play She Persisted the Musical, opening at the Atlantic Theatre Company in February. Tobin has also taught story and pitching seminars at DreamWorks Animation, Twentieth Century Fox/Blue Sky Studios, and Aardman Animations. He is an alum of Stanford and holds an MFA in screenwriting from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
